WCA and Sports Data Labs Sign Term Sheet to Establish Player-Led Framework to Strengthen Player Data Collection, Protection, and Commercialization for Professional Cricketers

London and Cleveland – The World Cricketers’ Association (WCA), the global representative body for professional cricketers across 17 countries, has entered into a term sheet with Sports Data Labs, Inc. (SDL) that outlines a partnership focused on strengthening how players’ personal data is protected, managed and used across the global game.

As cricket becomes increasingly global and data-driven, many players now operate across multiple teams, leagues and high-performance environments throughout the year. This has created growing complexity around how player data – ranging from high performance information to medical records – is collected, shared and used.

The partnership is aimed at addressing this challenge by supporting a more consistent, secure and player-led approach to their own data. It follows existing SDL partnerships with FIFPRO on behalf of the world’s professional footballers, the NFL Players Association, the PSA Squash Tour, and Cleveland Clinic amongst others.

Under the framework set out in the term sheet, SDL’s AI-enabled data platform would provide players with a centralized system to manage their personal data. This would enable players to better understand, control and provide informed consent around how their data is used and commercialized. The platform has been designed to bring together player data from wearable sensors, EMR systems, and other team, league and third-party sources into a secure, consent-managed framework for all professional cricketers across WCA member associations and affiliated player groups. It is intended to support access to real-time and on-demand personalized insights that can assist performance, health and wellbeing, while also creating future opportunities for players to participate in the value generated from their data.

“Players are at the heart of the global game, and as the use of data continues to grow, it’s essential that they are properly protected, informed, and have control and oversight on how their personal data is used.”said Tom Moffat, CEO of the WCA.

“Most of the best players in the world operate across multiple high-performance environments in different countries throughout the year. A more consistent and player-led approach to managing data across those environments is an important step forward, and a logical one in cricket. This is about ensuring players have clarity, protection and confidence in a rapidly evolving area of the game, while also supporting better outcomes for their performance, health and long-term wellbeing. We look forward to continuing discussions with SDL and our members as we work towards building a practical player-led solution that benefits both players and the wider game.”

A Standardized AI Athlete Data Architecture Across Global SportThe WCA partnership represents the latest addition to SDL’s broader effort with its partners to implement a standardized AI Athlete Data Architecture for professional athletes focused on consent, interoperability, data portability, and biological mapping. Their goal is to ensure that every data point is translated into clinically meaningful, longitudinal intelligence, giving cricketers and other athletes globally personalized health & performance insights, as well as opportunities to create value with their data, during their career and beyond.

“We are honored to have been selected by the WCA to support their member associations and players globally while creating new opportunities with athlete data in cricket,” said Mark Gorski, Co-Founder & CEO of Sports Data Labs“We are building an ecosystem with our partners across all levels of sport that empowers athletes in the collection, control, enrichment, and monetization of their personal data, while providing third parties with greater access to consent-based data to unlock new value. We look forward to rolling out our platform with the WCA for the benefit of all stakeholders in global cricket.”
